Thank you for your interest in becoming a Keeper Aide Volunteer for the Bird exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. Volunteers are needed to help the animal care staff clean enclosures,
prepare food and enrichment items, and assist the keepers with other duties.
Volunteers must be able to commit to one day per week for a minimum of one year. Shifts are from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Several weekday shifts are available. Weekend shifts are currently full. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old in order to be considered.
Please fill this form out completely. If you wish to include a resume, you can attach a PDF in the application.
Please note: These positions are highly competitive and there are limited spaces available. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of placement. The Smithsonian Institution and FONZ are committed to providing the safest environment for our staff and volunteers, as well as for our guests. Select applicants will be interviewed by keeper staff, and those that are provisionally accepted must pass a Smithsonian background check which includes fingerprinting as a requirement for approval as a Zoo Support Volunteer prior to beginning to volunteer. Applicants must also submit proof of required vaccinations, including tetanus and a negative TB test, to the Zoo's health unit.
