Before beginning, read through this form completely and be sure you have all the necessary information, photos, and other items. That way once you begin completing the application you will have all the required materials at hand. You will not be able to submit an incomplete application.

You will need:

  • All of your address and contact information for yourself, your parents or guardians, and other adults
  • A current photo (.jpeg or .tiff, please)
  • Your completed essay questions
  • Your medical information (including insurance plan numbers and doctors' contact information)
  • The names and email addresses of two people who will provide reference letters for you. Your references should be adults (18 years or older) who know you well but who are not related to you (teacher, family friend, coach, etc.)

Your references must submit their responses before the deadline in order for you to be considered. (The reference documents will be automatically generated when you submit your application; please make sure they have enough time to complete your reference and send it to us.) As a reminder, submission of an application is not a guarantee of placement.

Important Dates

  • Application due date (returning volunteers): Friday, February 21, 2020
  • Application due date (new volunteers): Friday, February 28, 2020
  • Notification of selection for interview: Friday, March 13, 2020

All candidates must be available for an in-person interview date on Saturday, March 21, 2020, and must be available for in-person training on May 9 or June 7.

Due to staffing and space considerations, we are not able to waive the in-person interview and training requirements. Candidates who cannot attend the interview or training dates will not be considered for placement.

Age Requirements

All teen volunteers must be at least 13 by June 22, 2020, and no older than 17 by August 14, 2020. Teens turning 18 years old before Aug. 14, 2020, are encouraged to apply for openings in the adult volunteer programs.

Your references
In order to be considered for this program, your references must submit their recommendations through the online form that will be automatically sent to them. When you submit your form, please contact your references and ask them to send in their evaluation as soon as possible. References must be at least 18 years old and not be related to the candidate.

Please provide two emergency contacts (name, relationship, email and phone numbers).

Your emergency contact will be notified in the case of a medical emergency involving you. In the event that your emergency contact cannot be reached, your parent or guardian must authorize the calling of a doctor and the providing of necessary medical services in the event you are injured or become ill.

Please ask your parent or guardian to use a mouse or their finger to sign below indicating FONZ staff have permission to provide routine healthcare, dispense approved medications, and seek emergency treatments if necessary.

Medical and health information
Any medication (inhaler, epi pen, allergy meds etc.) that accompanies a teen volunteer must be approved by a physician. You will need to submit a separate form that will be included in the confirmation packet we send out via email. If there are any questions, please contact the office at 202-633-3024.

Your availability
Our camp program begins June 22nd and ends August 14th. The camp staff will make assignments based on volunteer availability, so for planning purposes, it would be helpful to know which weeks you will be available to volunteer.
Safari Day Camp junior class aides (ages 13-15) are required to work two weeks. Senior class aides (ages 16-17) are required to work a minimum of three weeks. Class aides are expected to arrive by 8:30 a.m. each day and will be able to leave by 3:30 p.m.

Transportation
If you will be dropped off or picked up from the Zoo, please provide the names of your driver and their alternate.
Upon acceptance, all teen volunteers will be required to submit a medical history form. Teen volunteers are required to observe the Zoo's attendance and behavior policies. Volunteers are also required to wear a FONZ volunteer shirt (provided at training) and khaki (light brown or tan) pants, shorts or skirts. No denim is allowed. Closed-toed shoes are preferred; flip-flops are not acceptable.
