Thank you for your interest in becoming a Keeper Aide Volunteer for the Primate program at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. The Primate Exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Zoo is home to great apes, gibbons, guenons, lemurs and other species. Volunteers are needed to help the animal care staff clean exhibits, prepare food and enrichment items, and when necessary, monitor animal activity on the Zoo's O-Line.

Volunteers must be able to commit to one day per week for a minimum of one year. Shifts are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Volunteers must be at least 21 years old in order to be considered. We are currently recruiting weekday volunteers for Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday only.

Please fill this form out completely. If you wish to include a resume, you can attach a PDF in the application.

Please note: these positions are highly competitive and there are limited spaces available. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of placement. The Smithsonian Institution and FONZ are committed to providing the safest environment for our staff and volunteers, as well as for our guests. Applicants will be interviewed by unit staff, and those who are provisionally accepted will be fingerprinted and must pass a Smithsonian background check for any convictions directly related to the volunteers' duties and responsibilities. Only job-related convictions will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate. All Zoo Support volunteers must also complete a health screening and online training prior to beginning to volunteer. If you are a current or former volunteer please log in before filling out this form. Go to to sign in with your email address and password, or click on the link to reset your password.
