Thank you for your interest in joining the Smithsonian's National Zoo's Kids' Farm volunteer program. As a volunteer, your role will be to talk with visitors to the National Zoo and introduce them to the Kids' Farm. You will also be helping keepers care for the animals at the Farm. This exhibit is home to domestic animals found in farms across the U.S. and world-wide. Their exhibits are designed to encourage and enable the animals' natural behavior. Through on-line and in-person training you will learn about the exhibit and how to share information with Zoo guests.

This is a year-round volunteer opportunity. Both weekday and weekend volunteers are being recruited. Volunteers are asked to work one four-hour shift every other week, year-round. To be eligible, volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and should be comfortable spending time on their feet for the shifts, interacting with the public, caring for animals, and completing requested tasks.

If you've never volunteered before, please create an ID and password in the fields below. We recommend you use your email address as your ID, but create a unique new password for this site. If you have previously volunteered but have forgotten your ID and password, go to and use the "Forgot Password" link to request a new temporary password. If you have questions, contact Suzanne Hough at for help.

Please note: These positions are highly competitive and there are limited spaces available. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of placement. The Smithsonian Institution and FONZ are committed to providing the safest environment for our staff and volunteers, as well as for our guests. Applicants will be selected for interview by keeper staff, and those who are provisionally accepted will be fingerprinted and must pass a Smithsonian background check for any convictions directly related to the job duties and responsiblities. Only job-related convictions will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate.

All Zoo Support Volunteers must also complete a health screening and online training prior to beginning to volunteer.
