Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Friends of the National Zoo. This year the Smithsonian's Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), located in Front Royal, VA, is hosting the Conservation Discovery Day on Saturday October 6th 2018.

Volunteer shifts will run from 8:30am to 12:30pm and 12:30pm to 4:30pm on Saturday, and we are delighted to have your help!

Please fill this form out completely. If you have never volunteered with us before, you'll need to create a User ID and password. We recommend you use your email address as your User ID. If you are already an active volunteer and need to reset your password, contact Nick Davis at

Unless pre-arranged, you will be assigned to an exhibit or station when you arrive. We ask for your flexibility in case of last minute assignment changes the day of the event.

Lunch will be provided at Volunteer Check-In (we will deliver lunches to volunteers who are not located near the central campus). We will have a vegetarian option available, but will not be able to accommodate other dietary restrictions. Volunteers and staff are not allowed to drink alcohol during the event.

You should receive a confirmation email within 36 hours. (If you don't, please check your spam filter.) You will receive further details closer to the event about your assignment. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact Nick Davis at or call 540-635-0495.

This event will be held rain or shine, so we need you even if the sun isn't shining!

Emergency Contact

The Conservation Discovery Day will be held on Saturday, October 6th. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for both shifts (whole day) or just one shift either AM (8:30-12:30) or PM (12:30-4:30). Please only sign up for both shifts (All Day) if you are available to work. If you sign up for the whole day, we will assign you for both shifts!
Volunteers will be able to take a break and a light lunch will be provided between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Some volunteer assignments are not located near the central campus; if you are assigned at one of those locations, we will deliver your lunch and water directly to you. Please note: because the lunches are donated, we are unable to accommodate allergies or special dietary concerns. If you have a restricted diet, we recommend you bring your own meal with you.
